Despite recent layoffs in its Reality Labs division, Meta is still charging forward with plans for a Quest 4 in 2026 and a higher-end headset in 2027, according to The Information.
While the report didn’t dive into hardware specifics, it’s the first time we’ve got timelines for these devices. The Quest 4 will supposedly come in two versions: a standard and a premium, internally known as “Pismo Low” and “Pismo High.” A higher-end model, codenamed “La Jolla,” is expected in 2027, aiming to compete with the Apple Vision Pro. The report didn’t mention Ventura, a more affordable headset that The Verge previously hinted might be released later this year.
Beyond the Quest headsets, Meta is also expected to launch a pair of AR glasses with an actual display. However, The Information notes there’s some skepticism about these glasses. Unlike the current Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, this new pair will reportedly weigh around 70g and have a “bulky design” due to the display. Because of this bulkiness, they likely won’t carry the Ray-Ban branding, as Ray-Ban’s parent company, EssilorLuxottica, wasn’t thrilled with the design.
This bulky design issue isn’t surprising. Most AR glasses with displays face the same challenge. It’s tough to shrink displays to a wearable size while keeping battery life and power usage in check. As a result, many companies have put style on the back burner, which has been a major obstacle to consumer adoption.
