Netflix has removed its video streaming app from the Quest content store.
As reported by UploadVR, the long-neglected Netflix app for Quest is now unavailable for download. If you had previously downloaded the app, you will find that it no longer functions.
However, you can still watch Netflix on Quest. The streaming service recently upgraded the streaming quality in the Quest Browser to 1080p, a significant improvement over the app’s 480p capped resolution. The app also lacked support for mixed reality passthrough and downloads.
The Netflix app was originally released in 2015 for Samsung Gear VR and was developed by former Meta CTO John Carmack. Over the years, it received very few updates, with the latest one arriving in 2019 alongside the launch of the original Quest.
Why hasn’t Netflix developed a new official app? To stream beyond the 480p cap, devices must be certified, meeting technical requirements, submitting for testing, and potentially negotiating licensing agreements—steps that Meta would need to initiate.
Notably, Quest offers native apps for Amazon Prime Video, Pluto TV, MLB, and its own Meta TV app. However, it lacks apps for Disney+, Hulu, Paramount+, and HBO Max.
