Virtual reality has the potential to transform any industry that relies on practical interactions, from education, manufacturing, and especially healthcare. We have already written about some ways to apply VR in medicine. Medicalholodeck is one of those ways.
MedicalHolodeck is a set of vr applications that are designed for medical students when preparing exams, professionals to plan operations in teams, and in medical education for teaching in virtual classrooms. This isn’t a game. It is a tool that allows visualization of REAL medical images.
In 3D printing, surgical model preparation and 3D printing easily take hours of working time. With Medicalholodeck, medical images are displayed and are available within seconds. When it comes to animated 4D data, the benefits are obvious and 3D printing will never be able to show case for those benefits. Medicalholodeck is the only VR software that can display four-dimensional DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) data, both in real time and in teams.
Medicalholodeck consists of 3 main applications: Medical Imaging XR, Dissection Master XR and Anatomy Master XR. All apps run on any connected virtual reality hardware and are ready to team up in VR and for live web streaming.
Medical Imaging XR
Medical Imaging XR is a DICOM browser for professional teamwork in virtual reality. The software enables to import and edit medical images in DICOM and 3D formats. The application provides functions for editing medical images in VR, such as tools for segmenting, measuring, filtering or cutting. It is possible to import the following data:
- 3D DICOM from CT, MRI and CBCT
- 2D DICOM from ultrasound and angiography
- 3D data in OBJ and STL formats
Dissection Master XR
Dissection Master XR is a laboratory for human anatomy and simulation in virtual reality. The app offers high-resolution 3D data on human corpses in a VR classroom environment. Expertly dissected bodies can be studied layer by layer from the outer muscles to the internal organs. It is possible to import the following data:
- 8 layers of the head and chest
- 5 layers of abdomen and pelvis
- 10 layers of hands
Anatomy Master XR
Study precise 3D models of male and female human anatomy of zygotes in virtual reality. High-resolution and carefully textured 3D models can be disassembled and studied as an interactive 3D object from either side. Beautifully textured anatomical data can be cut, filtered and enlarged.
Anatomy Master XR can be used simultaneously with Dissection Master XR and Medical Imaging XR. This allows accurate models of human anatomy, high-resolution anatomical dissections and medical images to be compared in DICOM format, and provides a comprehensive solution for medical education.
Advantage over computers
Medicalholodeck’s new support for medical 4D data offers a variety of benefits to medical professionals. Image processing, medical diagnosis and surgery planning take place in virtual reality without the limitations of the computer screen. Surgeons can now independently process radiological images, gaining optimal personal insight into their patients. They can plan the upcoming operation quickly and efficiently – from their own point of view. With Medicalholodeck, complications can be identified before surgery, and surgical procedures can be adjusted.
Advantages over computers:
- fully immersive, holographic use of medical imaging
- Data of 4D CT, 4D MRI and 4D echocardiography in VR
- real-size screen with unlimited scaling options
- Ability to work in holographic teamwork
Medicalholodeck can also be used in universities for surgical training, medical instruction and anatomical education. The app offers a unique resource for modern medical education
Advantages over 3D printers
Compared to 3D printing technologies, virtual reality offers a variety of advantages, but also great savings. Medicalholodeck imports data directly from pacs (picture archiving and communication system), hard drive or cloud. The import procedure takes only a few seconds, and the data can be fully edited during the time of use.
Advantages of 3D printing:
- No waiting time
- No data segmentation is required
- No 3D printers required
- Possible animated display of data
- Edit real-time data at any time
- Ability to work as a holographic team
With Medicalholodeck, long-term segmentation and data preparation is not required. The surgeon is working on the original DICOM data obtained by the radiology department. The surgeon can precisely set and change the displayed tissue density at any time, which significantly improves his understanding of the case. Compared to 3D printing, the required hardware and infrastructure costs for Medicalholodeck are minimal. Thanks to Medicalholodeck’s Cloud Rendering capacity, the computer is no longer needed. Only a commercially available vr device is required.
Using Medicalholodeck saves time and energy. In 3D printing, surgical model preparation and 3D printing easily take hours of working time. With Medicalholodeck, medical images are displayed and are available within seconds. When it comes to animated 4D data, the benefits are obvious and 3D printing will never be able to show case for those benefits. Medicalholodeck is the only VR software that can display four-dimensional DICOM data, both in real time and in teams.
MedicalHolodeck is available in 2 versions: free trial and paid version levels for specific uses. The trial version can be downloaded on the Steam application, while the paid versions can be purchased on their official website.
