In a groundbreaking collaboration, Digital Catapult and Target3D have unveiled the UK’s first Advanced Media Production studios network, poised to reshape the landscape of media creation. This network harnesses cutting-edge technologies, including motion capture, virtual production, 5G private networks, XR equipment, and photogrammetry, to take media production to unprecedented heights.
State-of-the-Art Facilities
The network’s launch is marked by the introduction of two state-of-the-art facilities, one in Gateshead and the other in London. These studios are equipped with cutting-edge technology designed to cater to the evolving needs of the media and entertainment industry.
Located in London’s Dock Street, this studio boasts two voluminous spaces, designed for motion capture of up to ten performers simultaneously. It enables comprehensive capture, including full-body, finger, and facial expressions, along with intricate performance sequencing. The applications of this technology span across virtual and augmented reality experiences, visual effects, and animation.
Gateshead’s Virtual Production Hub
The Gateshead facility houses a unique curved LED screen within an 8mx3.5m LED volume. This innovative setup is ideal for virtual production, offering creators the ability to immerse themselves in dynamic and visually stunning environments.
These studios are interconnected through a private 5G network, a vital component that allows multiple forms of media content creation concurrently. This infrastructure empowers remote content direction, fosters collaboration on a national and international scale, and enhances production efficiency.
The network’s commitment to nurturing talent and supporting local communities is evident through its partnerships with educational institutions. Collaborations with ScreenSkills, Goldsmiths University of London, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and Gateshead College aim to accelerate research and innovation while bolstering local talent.
Digital Catapult’s Expanding Network
This venture adds to Digital Catapult’s existing network of 20 facilities across the UK. Jeremy Silver, CEO of Digital Catapult, emphasized the organization’s dedication to advancing the UK’s creative industries. He noted the importance of pushing boundaries, leading the world in an era of entertainment that combines sustainability and creativity while redefining media production, sharing, and consumption.
Allan Rankin, managing director of Target3D, highlighted the merging of the digital and real world, which opens doors to exciting possibilities. He stressed the importance of improving media creation in terms of quality, speed, intelligence, and sustainability. The AMP Dock Street studio has already made significant contributions to cutting-edge media content, video game development, cinematics, and immersive experiences.
